Combating Thermal Issues with Next-generation Tools
Todd Schneider, Director of New Product Development, Electrorack

In the midst of a global recession, one area that continues to show resiliency and growth is data centers. While many industry sectors have down-sized in this economy, data centers are headed in a different direction.

According to research conducted by IDC, the number of servers in the United States will jump 50 percent during the next four years.  Between 2006 and 2007, the energy required by data centers jumped more than 13 percent.  In fact, the cost to power and cool installed servers has doubled since 2000, and is expected to reach almost $40 billion annually by 2012.  By 2011, the cost to power a server for three years (the average lifecycle of a server) will exceed the cost of the server itself.

PRODUCT NEWS

New Harsh Environment Shielding  Gasket from Leader Tech
TechSIL 8000 oriented wire gasketing from Leader Tech offers a versatile way to prevent unwanted interference from leaking into the environment through electronic enclosure gaps and openings.  Available in strip and sheet form, the silicone based material is embedded with 700 to 900 parallel wires per square inch. This unique design allows the gasket to make a reliable electrical connection and environmental seal between any two mating surfaces. The material can be die-cut into complex shapes or fabricated into custom application gaskets.

Leader Tech’s TechSIL 8000 gaskets offer a shielding effectiveness of 100 dB for E-field and 50 dB for H-field emissions. The rugged construction of the gasket can withstand harsh environmental temperature fluctuations ranging from -80°F to +500°F making it suited for a broad range of commercial and military applications.

Pelican Hardigg Introduces 33 Inch DE Cases
To protect, secure and transport the latest sensitive rack mounted electronics (Up to 33 inch), Pelican-Hardigg has introduced the Pelican Hardigg 33 inch DE Cases. The DE Cases feature extra-deep, dual-lids to allow enough room to store optional quick-connect casters and cords that can be coiled and stay connected to stored units.

Features include internal rack mount brackets with a 2-inch sway clearance, eight diagonal shock mounts that provide impact protection and Lock ‘N’ Load pins for quick equipment connection. Additionally, they boast square-hole adapters that allow for use with a wide variety equipment/servers without custom brackets and mounting rails. A conversion kit is also available for EIA 1-32 hole patterns and the rapid rail square pattern.

Available in five sizes (3U to 9U) the cases are rotationally molded and offer reinforced corners to provide enhanced impact/drop protection. Additional transport friendly features include molded-in ribs for maximum stacking strength and ten tough-as-nails twist-lock fasteners that work with polymer gaskets to ensure that the case is water/dust resistant and the lid stays secure.

Digital Staging Controller Drives Contactors for up to 10 Heaters or Cooling Devices
Athena Controls, Inc. has introduced its new series DS Digital Staging Controller. The series DS Stager is capable of driving contactors for up to ten heaters or cooling devices to maintain a process at setpoint. A single stager can control a mix of heating and cooling outputs, and the quantity of outputs dedicated to heating and cooling can be easily configured on site by the user.

Designed for heater wear balancing, the stager can be set to use outputs in a circular rotation or in an up-then-down sequence. It can also be set to accept input from a thermistor, such as an Athena Controls 65006, and perform temperature control under the direction of the onboard processor. The stager is also able to compensate for the effects of outdoor temperature when an additional outdoor thermistor is used.

LineGuard Surge Suppressors Protect Vulnerable Data Lines
Para Systems, Inc. has released a new line of data line surge suppressors designed to protect equipment from being damaged by electrical surges or spikes. The new Minuteman LineGuard products are intended to protect analog and digital surveillance cameras, DVRs, plus other network peripherals, including devices using Power Over Ethernet (POE).

Minuteman’s LineGuard products incorporate solid-state surge protection technology with a response time of two to five nanoseconds, clamping the surge to ground and automatically resetting itself after a low-voltage surge occurs. If a catastrophic surge such as lightning does hit a data line, the LineGuard product provides fail-safe protection, sometimes sacrificing itself to prevent damage to the more expensive devices it was designed to defend.

Style 96 Lift-Off Hinges from Southco Provide Greater Design Flexibility
The Southco 96 line of lift-off hinges now includes stainless steel and chrome plated finish options to allow designs greater choices and design flexibility.

The stainless steel 96 hinges provide increased loading capability and corrosion resistance suitable for installation in chemical processing, high heat and outdoor environments. The polished and satin chrome 96 hinges provide a sleek, streamlined look for designers seeking enhanced aesthetics.

The 96 line of hinges are easily installed and allow doors to be quickly and safely removed without tools. A non-lift-off mounting configuration allows for permanent installation, and a rear mount option conceals hardware for a professional appearance.
