The Power Monitoring Imperative: Add an Umbrella of Protection Over Your IT Infrastructure
The first time the hosting provider’s 144,000-square-foot data center suffered an outage, customers groused and the company apologized on its blog. The second time, they didn’t get off so easily. When power generator failures triggered a “brief loss of network connectivity to some servers,” causing customer applications to go down for part of the day, the company was compelled to pay out between $2.5 million and $3.5 million in service credits to impacted customers. The point is, the most rigorous redundancy in servers, storage and networking means nothing if you lose the power to run it, even briefly.

Photo Etched Metal Parts and Flexible Printed Circuits

Organized to help design engineers specify components, the new Tech-Etch website at www.tech-etch.com with over 150 pages details three product areas: EMI/RFI shielding, photo etched precision parts, and flexible printed circuits. Each product area is described and pictured, including sales and contact information, manufacturing technologies, material descriptions, and ordering information. New web pages describe and show examples of products manufactured for each industry. Slide shows in product areas contain additional examples of manufactured components.

Free samples may be ordered from the line of standard products in the shielding section, including beryllium copper finger stock, wire mesh, metalized gaskets, connector gaskets, sheet and strip gaskets, conductive fabric, plus filters and vents. A complete on-line catalog of standard shielding products with gap ranges and line drawings can be viewed, and interactive PDF sales drawings can be downloaded for over 100 standard profiles. Interactive PDFs also enable engineers to design their own standard one and two-piece board level shields.

The photo etching section details the manufacture of light-gauge parts from a wide range of materials, including elgiloy, titanium, copper alloys, tungsten, polyimide, molybdenum, stainless steels, and nitinol. The site explains how photo etching allows complete design flexibility, eliminates the cost of hard tooling and shortens lead times. Dimension tolerances are listed and forming, plating and heat treating capabilities are explained.

Flexible printed circuits are produced on polyimide substrates using advanced manufacturing processes. Tech-Etch specializes in circuits for medical devices, implants, diagnostic ultrasound, telecom, and patient monitoring. Adalet Receives IECEx Certification on XCEX Series Enclosures
Adalet has recently received IECEx certification on its XCEX series of bolted flange flameproof enclosures and auxiliary devices. The XCEX series includes 81 standard sizes all approved to gas group IIB with an IP66 rating. The Adalet enclosures, available with window kits, conduit / cable entries, and auxiliary devices, are also approved to IEC 60079-0, IEC 60079-1, IEC 61241-0, and IEC 61241-1 international standards.

The objective of the IECEx System is to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in explosive atmospheres. Certification helps reduce testing and certification costs to the manufacturer, reduces time to market, provides International confidence in the product assessment process and provides one international database listing

As described on www.iecex.com, the IECEx system is an international conformity system where a mark of conformity will be granted by approved IECEx certifiers (ExCBs) located in IECEx participating countries for equipment that is covered by an IECEx Certificate of Conformity and hence has been tested and manufactured under systems that are under ongoing surveillance by ExCBs.

New Compact Three-phase EMI Filters from LCR Suppress EMI Emissions
LCR Electronics now offers the 096C series filters for high current three-phase applications. The 096C series features high inductance common mode coils to increase filter attenuation performance.

Designed to handle currents from 250 A to 800 A at 50°C, these filters are designed for high current applications such as solar and wind power inverters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), battery chargers, CNC machines, injection molding and electrical discharge machining (EDM) equipment.

High current filters are traditionally designed with single turn common mode coils. The 096C series filters feature multi-turn coils to increase common mode inductance and increase the filter attenuation capabilities to suppress EMI emissions generated by high current switching devices from 100 KHz and up. These filters are in compliance with all safety and environmental requirements of UL1283 and IEC 60939.

Fujipoly Releases New Damage Resistant Thermal Gap Filler
An important consideration among electronics manufacturers is the damage that can be done to a thermal gap filler pad during delicate assembly and re-work operations. To help alleviate this problem, Fujipoly has introduced the Sarcon 50G-Hm. This low resistance gap filler pad is manufactured with a special low-tac top surface.

The unique, one-sided treatment is less sticky than the opposing surface allowing the thermal pad to adhere to either the target electrical component or opposing heat sink. This allows for quick and easy removal without ripping, warping or damaging the interface material.

Sarcon 50G-Hm transfers heat with a thermal conductivity of 6.0 W/m°K and a very low thermal resistance of 0.16°Cin2/W at 72.5 PSI.  This 0.5mm thick, flame retardant TIM is available in sheets up to 300 mm by 200 mm.

L-com Introduces Complete Line of DIN 3 Rail Mountable Lightning Protectors
L-com, Inc. now carries a line of DIN rail mountable lightning and surge protectors. The products come in models that protect Cat5, Cat5e and Cat6 lines, RS-422 and RS-485 lines, telephone/DSL/T1 lines and 4 to 20 mA current loop lines.

The lightning protectors are designed to mount onto DIN 3 rail systems, such as those used in L-com’s NEMA rated DIN rail waterproof enclosures. L-com’s DIN mounted protectors are integrated in DIN rail systems without the need of drilling holes into the racks and cabinets, saving much time and effort.

PEM C.A.P.S. Captive Panel Screws Offered in Three Mounting Styles
PEM C.A.P.S. captive panel screws integrate a captive screw with anti cross-threading feature and a PC/ABS colored knob to provide a fastener solution where subsequent access to an assembly may be required.  These spring-loaded assemblies install permanently in aluminum or steel sheets as thin as 0.036 inches and can be supplied in self-clinching, flaring or floating mounting styles. Their captive-screw design reduces parts to be handled and eliminates risk of screws falling out and damaging internal components.

PEM C.A.P.S. captive panel screws install by pressing them into properly prepared mounting holes. The shoulder on the retainer provides a positive stop. The anti cross-threading screw technology reliably corrects off-angle thread mating and ensures proper alignment. The hardware is available in multiple screw lengths with thread sizes from #4-40 through #10-32 / M3 through M5. A Phillips drive enables tool access and the robust knurled knob allows for hand operation.

Industrial PC Market Projected for Strong Growth to 2015
A new IMS Research report on the world market for industrial PCs (IPCs) estimated total revenues of $2.07 billion in 2010.  Strong growth is projected to 2015, with world IPC revenues reaching $3.52 billion.

The world IPC market was hit very hard by the global recession, with 2009 revenues taking a big hit in all major regions. Drops in Europe, Middle East and Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) and Japan were estimated at 26, 22, 9 and 32 percent respectively. The 2010 IPC market rebounded strongly, with all regions and sectors registering growth as projects that had been postponed came back on line and IPC distributors and users replenished stock.

As labor costs increase in traditionally low-cost manufacturing regions, such as China and India, there will also be an increasing motivation to automate processes.  This will mean replacing manual labor with machinery, which will benefit the IPC markets of developing regions.

However, following the bounce back from the recession, market recovery is now faltering in some principal economies as uncertainty reduces investment. The effects are yet to be widely seen in the IPC market, with strong growth in 2011 and a positive outlook for 2012, but they will undoubtedly filter through if problems persist.
