A Look Ahead: The New UL 50 12th Edition Standard for Electrical Enclosures
As we look ahead to the coming year, electrical equipment enclosure manufacturers know that 2012 holds the task of passing an important new standards edition, released by Underwriters Laboratory (UL). On September 4, 2012, the 12th edition of UL 50 standards will be implemented, meaning that all electrical enclosure manufacturers must be in compliance by that date. If that news sounds insignificant, guess again.

CX-Series: Innovative Circuit Protection for Photovoltaic Systems and High DC Voltage Applications!
Carling Technologies is proud to introduce the CX-Series circuit breaker, which features a unique and innovative patent pending arc quenching configuration that allows the breaker to safely handle high amperage and high DC voltage applications in a compact package.
By using a patent pending magnetic flux boosting terminal configuration, a strong magnetic field is created thus motivating the arc into an enhanced arc chamber improving the breaker’s overall performance and reliability.
The permanent magnets located at the entrance of the arc chamber combined with the upper and lower arc runner increase the magnetic blow out force and aid in motivating the arc off of the contacts and into the arc chamber.
An enhanced arc chamber features arc splitter retainers with integrated pressurizing walls, which facilitates heat transfer from the arc thereby providing additional cooling and quick transition into the magnetically induced splitter plates. In turn, the twelve splitter plates attract, segment and cool the arc for full extinction.
Combined, these innovative features make the CX-Series breaker the best in class, providing stable performance even in the most demanding applications.
Applications:
- Combiner boxes and/or main disconnects of photovoltaic renewable energy systems.
- Information Technologies’ power distribution equipment utilizing high DC voltage input.

Pentair Technical Products Expands Hoffman Line of Floor-Mount Type 4 Enclosures
Pentair Technical Products has added four new 18 inch deep models to its Hoffman two-door, floor-mount Type 4 enclosures, bulletin number A4L3. With the addition of these models, the line includes solutions for an even wider range of applications. Featuring a UL Type 4 rating, these enclosures are well suited for use in indoor or outdoor environments where it is necessary to protect controls and instrumentation from wet, potentially corrosive environments.
A4L3 enclosures utilize the Hoffman PowerGlide handle with three-point latching for secure closure. The latching system provides sufficient compression to meet UL Type 4 requirements without the use of quarter-turn latching, offering security as well as easy and quick access.
Littelfuse Introduces the SP3012 Series TVS Diode Arrays for Protection of USB 3.0 Ports
Littelfuse, Inc. has made an addition to its line with the SP3012 series, expanding its range of TVS Diode Arrays (SPA family) for ESD protection of high-speed ports such as USB 3.0. The SP3012 series offers a low loading of capacitance of 0.5pF while providing ESD protection of ±12 kV, exceeding the maximum level specified in the IEC61000-4-2 international standard. Additionally, it provides added clamping performance due to its low dynamic resistance of 0.4Ω, which reduces the peak voltage seen by the chipset by as much as 80 percent in some cases when compared with similar competitive products.
The SP3012 also benefits the board designer by allowing the traces to be routed directly underneath device simplifying the PCB design. The µDFN-10 package measures only 2.5 by 1.0 by 0.5 mm making it well suited for equipment that uses USB 3.0 such as external hard disk drives, set-top boxes, notebooks, smart phones, digital cameras and MP3/PMP players.
New Triton Ice Thermoelectric Chill to Unprecedented Temperatures
Marlow Industries has released a new Triton ICE thermoelectric module series that will chill electronics as much as 2°C below current market offerings. Inspired by sub-zero temperatures on Neptune’s moon Triton, the coolers can improve customer electronic systems in thermal performance, cost, noise, weight, size or efficiency.
Managing heat in electronics is a common issue, and systems today require high-reliability solutions to achieve maximum temperature differences for the application. The Triton ICE modules exceed the industry standard in cooling capacity, rate and efficiency while using the same input power. As solid-state heat pumps, they offer improved reliability.
New 100 Watt Chassis Mount Switching AC/DC Power Supply
ConTech has introduced the CM100 series of AC/DC switching power supplies. The CM100 series offers 100 W of fully regulated output power in a chassis mount case, which makes it well suited for many applications. The easily accessible terminal block and output voltage adjustment potentiometer give it the versatility to be used as a power solution in a large assortment of applications.
The CM100 series has a universal input voltage range of 88 to 264 VAC The series offers output voltages of 12, 24 and 48 VDC, with efficiencies up to 84 percent. The CM100 series has protective features such as short circuit, over voltage and overload protection. The metal cage type chassis mount case is designed for free air convection cooling. The CM100 series is rated for 3,000 VAC isolation, is RoHS compliant and has UL 60950 approval.

Munters Indirect Air-Side Economizer Units Installed on Australian Data Center
A major data center in Sydney, Australia is now equipped with 44 rooftop units from Munters to achieve optimum infrastructure conditions. Forty Indirect Air-Side Economizer (IASE) cooling units that feature Munters polymer tube air-to-air heat exchangers provide efficient heat rejection in both dry (winter mode) and wet conditions (summer indirect evaporative cooling mode). Munters also provided four ventilation/humidity control units that ensure proper indoor air quality by introducing fresh outdoor air, controlling room dew point by dehumidifying or humidifying, and maintaining a slight positive pressure in the data center.
Munters IASE heat rejection units include on-board refrigeration to supplement the heat exchanger (HX) cooling as required. Based on the data center operating conditions, the HX will provide 100 percent of the cooling for almost 70 percent of annual hours in the mild Sydney environment. The units are predicted to have an annual SEER of just over 40. The equipment includes industrial grade controls for reliable performance and integration with the building management system.
BICSI Helps Spearhead Green Rating System for Technology Projects
BICSI has announced its affiliation as a founding member of The Sustainable Technology Environments Program (STEP) Foundation, a coalition of technology associations seeking to define sustainability for the broadband and electronics industry.
Going green has been a topic of growing importance in recent years. Certification systems have been created for those who follow the green methodology. The STEP Foundation is working to complement the LEED standard by adding a rating system for the technology systems that work within the physical building.
Founded by InfoComm International and CompTIA, STEP has been created by manufacturers, designers, integrators, programmers and the users of technology to guide project and building owners to implement practices that will produce economic benefits to their organization while preserving the planet. It fills the void not addressed by other green rating systems and establishes a position alongside rating systems such as LEED and Energy Star.

New Free MovinCool Guide to Cooling IT Equipment in Heated Buildings
MovinCool has published a new free guide for facility managers, IT managers and mechanical contractors, “How to Prevent IT Equipment from Overheating — in Winter: Keeping Server Rooms and Telecom Closets Cool in Heated Buildings.”
“Many businesses house their server and telecom equipment in converted closets or other small rooms, but often there is no way of cooling these heat-dense spaces when the building’s main air conditioning system is switched to heating mode,” said Fran Labun, vice president, Sales Groups. “This sets the stage for possible equipment failure, costly damage, or even costlier system downtime.”
MovinCool’s seven-page guide addresses this problem by examining the advantages of a new class of self-contained, ceiling-mounted air conditioners, which are specifically designed for cooling small spaces with dense heat loads. The guide is available as a free download from the MovinCool Web site at http://www.movincool.com/pdf/wintercooling.
